Saint Aloysius Parish was founded in 1892 in Caldwell. The parish was the original “mother church” of the West Essex area of the Archdiocese of Newark. The parishioners have given of themselves to make the parish what it is today: a community of faith, prayer and service. In the history of the parish, it is recorded that the early parishioners built the first church in three months. Much of the work was done in the evenings after their own day’s work. That same spirit fills the parish community today. The desire to build up their own faith commitment to the Lord, to share that faith with others through worship and witness, to share with those in need, and pride in their parish community typify the parishioners of Saint Aloysius.
The original church building was completed in1892. Our current church building stands across the street from the location of the original church. Its cornerstone was laid in 1923. Our current school building was built in 1952. In 1959, the new convent was completed, along with renovations made to the rectory. Our gymnasium, one of the largest in the area, was completed in 1965. Our Parish center was purchased in the mid-1990’s.
Under the guidance of our 18th pastor, our parish continues to be a vibrant center of faith filled activity. We are blessed to have over 2,600 registered families, over 700 children enrolled in our catechetical program, and approximately 350 students registered in Trinity Academy, our Pre-K to 8th grade school, which is co-sponsored with Notre Dame Parish in North Caldwell, and Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Roseland.
